In a business workgroup environment it may be necessary to block the upgrade to Windows 10 via the Windows Registry due to the lack of Group Policies. If the Windows 10 Upgrade was accepted by mistake and rolled back you will still need to block the upgrade as it can try installing again.
To Open the Windows Registry and Block the Windows 10 Upgrade please follow these steps:
Step 1
Open the Run command (opens in new tab)
Step 2
Type in regedit and press [ENTER}
Step 3
Navigate to the Following Subkey:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
Note: you will need to create the WindowsUpdate key if it doesn’t exist
Step 4
Create a New DWORD Value in the right pane named DisableOSUpgrade and assign it a value of 1
Step 5 (Optional)
You may also wish to block the Windows 10 notification Icon from showing in the taskbar at the same time. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
Note: You will need to create the Gwx key if it doesn’t exist
Create a New DWORD Value in the right pane named DisableGWX and assign it a value of 1
Step 6
Reboot the computer
Applies to: Windows 7, Windows 8 & Windows 8.1
