What is Veeam and what does it back up?

Veeam is a backup and data protection platform that covers a broad range of systems from a single toolset: physical servers, virtual machines running on platforms like VMware and Hyper-V, individual computers, and cloud workloads. That breadth is part of its appeal, because it means one platform and one approach can protect a mixed environment rather than stitching together separate tools for each part.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is a distinct product within the Veeam family, licensed per user, and it protects Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Teams — the same platforms our dedicated Microsoft 365 backup service covers. It is licensed separately from the core platform that protects servers and VMs. We confirm which Veeam components your environment needs during scoping, so you are licensed for what you actually run and nothing you do not.

How does Veeam protect against ransomware?

Veeam’s main ransomware defence is immutability: backups written so they cannot be modified or deleted for a set retention period, even by someone with administrator credentials. Because modern ransomware deliberately targets backups, an immutable copy that the attacker cannot reach or destroy is what makes recovery without paying possible. Veeam supports immutable storage both on-premises and in cloud object storage.

Veeam pairs this with features like backup health checks and recovery testing, so you can have confidence the backups will actually restore. Immutability stops the backups being destroyed; verification confirms they are usable.
