Background
Brett has worked in IT since 1992, which covers the shift from on-premises servers and tape backup through to cloud platforms, managed security and the current move into automation. That span matters less as a credential than as a source of scepticism: he has seen enough technology cycles to be unimpressed by most of them, and the recommendations on this site reflect that.
He established 4iT in 2012 and took on the first staff member the following year. The business now manages more than 650 devices for businesses across the Hills District, Norwest, Parramatta, the M2 corridor and the Sydney CBD.
What he works on
Day to day the work splits between security and integration. On the security side that means Microsoft 365 and identity hardening, multi-factor authentication and conditional access, the Essential Eight, and getting clients through the security questionnaires that insurers and larger customers now send as a matter of course.
On the integration side it is connecting the systems a business already runs so data stops being entered twice, and building the focused tools that off-the-shelf software does not cover. That work has changed considerably in the last two years, and a large part of Brett’s current interest is in what a small provider can now deliver that would previously have required a much larger team.
He also sets the standard the rest of the business works to, including the rule that security controls sit in the baseline of every plan rather than being sold as extras, and that a client is told to buy rather than build when a product already does the job.
Writing on this site
Brett writes most of the articles published here, covering cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, networking, backup, compliance and automation for Australian SMEs. The articles are written to be useful to someone making a decision rather than to rank for a term, which means they say plainly when a product is not worth buying and when a control is not worth the effort.
Good places to start are Essential Eight for the security baseline most Australian SMEs are measured against, multi-factor authentication for the single highest-value control available, and password management for the cheapest problem most businesses have not fixed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Since 1992. That covers the era of on-premises servers, tape backup and dial-up through to cloud platforms, managed security services and the current shift into automation and AI-assisted delivery. He established 4iT Support Pty Ltd in 2012, so the business is younger than the experience behind it by twenty years.
Business owners of client organisations have his mobile number, and that is intended for discussions rather than day-to-day support: a decision about spend, something that has gone wrong, or planning for the year ahead. Routine support goes to the assigned technicians, because they are the people who know your systems and can act on a ticket immediately. If you are not yet a client and want a conversation, request a callback.
Cybersecurity and the Essential Eight, Microsoft 365 and identity management, networking and firewalls, backup and disaster recovery, and software integration and automation. The two areas taking most of his attention now are identity, because that is where most attacks against small businesses succeed, and integration, because it is where the largest efficiency gains for an SME currently sit.
Brett writes the majority of them. They are researched against primary sources such as vendor documentation and the Australian Cyber Security Centre rather than assembled from other blogs, and they are written to help someone make a decision, including when the decision is to spend nothing. Where an article makes a claim about a product or a deadline, it is checked before publication rather than repeated from a vendor's marketing.
If you would like to talk through what you are running now and where the gaps are, request a callback and Brett will come back to you.
