{"id":647,"date":"2016-05-18T15:36:44","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T04:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/4it.com.au\/kb\/?post_type=article&#038;p=647"},"modified":"2022-12-02T11:50:14","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T00:50:14","slug":"block-windows-10-upgrade-windows-update-via-windows-registry","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/4it.com.au\/kb\/article\/block-windows-10-upgrade-windows-update-via-windows-registry\/","title":{"rendered":"Block Windows 10 Upgrade through Windows Update via the Windows Registry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a business workgroup environment it may be necessary to block the upgrade to Windows 10 via the Windows Registry due to the lack of Group Policies. \u00a0If the Windows 10 Upgrade was accepted by mistake and rolled back you will still need to block the upgrade as it can try installing again.<\/p>\n<p>To Open the Windows Registry and Block the Windows 10 Upgrade please follow these steps:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1<\/h3>\n<p>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/4it.com.au\/kb\/article\/open-run-command-windows-7-windows-8-1-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Run<\/a> command (opens in new tab)<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2<\/h3>\n<p>Type in <strong>regedit<\/strong> and press [ENTER}<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3<\/h3>\n<p>Navigate to the Following Subkey:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Note: you will need to create the WindowsUpdate key if it doesn&#8217;t exist<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Step 4<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Create a New DWORD Value in the right pane named <strong>DisableOSUpgrade\u00a0<\/strong>and assign it a value of <strong>1<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Step 5 (Optional)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">You may also wish to block the Windows 10 notification Icon from showing in the taskbar at the same time. \u00a0Navigate to\u00a0<b>HKLM\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Gwx<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Note: You will need to create the Gwx key if it doesn&#8217;t exist<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Create a New DWORD Value in the right pane named <strong>DisableGWX<\/strong> and assign it a value of <strong>1<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Step 6<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reboot the computer<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Applies to: Windows 7, Windows 8 &amp; Windows 8.1<\/em><\/p>\n<div style='text-align:left' class='yasr-auto-insert-visitor'><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a business workgroup environment it may be necessary to block the upgrade to Windows 10 via the Windows Registry due to the lack of Group Policies. \u00a0If the Windows 10 Upgrade was accepted by mistake and rolled back you will still need to block the upgrade as it can try installing again.
